Federation Academy Policy on the Use of AI in Student Assignments
Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are present in the academic environment, but their use comes with significant risks and non-negotiable responsibilities. This policy outlines the strict conditions under which Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini) may be used in your assessments. Ignorance of these rules will not be accepted as an excuse for violation.
1. AI is a Tool for Understanding, Not for Writing.
You are permitted to use GenAI only to help you understand an assessment task's requirements or to generate high-level summaries of complex topics. It is categorically unacceptable to use AI to generate content that you submit as your own work. This includes cutting, pasting, paraphrasing, or lightly editing AI-generated text or ideas. Your assignments must be the product of your own critical thinking and original composition.
2. You Are Liable for AI's Shortcomings.
AI-generated content is often inaccurate, outdated, biased, or entirely fabricated. You are personally responsible for any fact, idea, or citation you include in your work, regardless of its source. If you choose to use AI-generated information and it proves to be false or misleading, you will be held accountable for the error. Blindly trusting AI is an academic risk you take at your own peril.
3. Failure to Cite is Academic Misconduct.
Any information, insight, or structure derived from a GenAI tool must be explicitly acknowledged and formally referenced using the appropriate referencing style (e.g., APA, Harvard) as outlined in the academy's guidelines. Presenting AI-generated content without clear citation constitutes plagiarism and is a direct violation of the Academic Integrity Policy.
4. You Must Be Prepared to Prove Your Authorship (own work).
The academy reserves the right to require you to demonstrate that you are the author of any submitted work. If you cannot authenticate your authorship when challenged, your work will be considered unauthorised and subject to penalty.
Violation of this policy constitutes academic misconduct and will be dealt with under the Federation Academy Academic Policy. Penalties can include failure of the assignment, failure of the course, or more severe academic expulsion.
Consider this your warning. Use AI with extreme caution and absolute integrity.
